Year End Wrap-Up / photographer news

As 2009 ends many people are glad to see it go. I am one of the few that looks back fondly on such a blessed year. Everyone has been healthy, happy and my photography business has taken off. I feel sad to see 2009 go, but excited to see what 2010 brings. There were a lot of ups, downs, twists and curves this year, but we made it through safe and sound. I'm so thankful for all of the opportunities that opened up for me this year, the wonderful people I've met and the support I've received.

I read other blogs pretty often, to learn and see what is happening in other people's lives or businesses. One blog posted the following questions for you to ask yourself about your year. I thought this would be the best day of the year, the last, to wrap-up my first year in business.

1. What was my best photo?
Okay, it's really hard to choose just one. I actually love two photos of myself, that were taken as a part of my "365 Project" of self portraits this year. If you know me personally, you know I was obsessed with this project! My growth as a photographer was unbelievable. I recommend it to anyone who wants to become a better photographer!

The 365 day project is where you take a self portrait of  yourself (or any part of your body must be in the photo) each day for a year. You must be in the photo, as well as take the photo. Sorry!! It doesn't count if someone else just takes a photo of you. Usually I have to use remotes, tripods, gorilla pods or other various things to tie up, hang or get a shot of myself. Thank goodness for camera timers!

Here are a few other fun groups that come up with daily themes for this project to keep you thinking and experimenting, some people choose to do 365 of objects, food, etc... instead of self portraits:
The Rogue Players
Flickr Group Roulette (warning, some inappropriate language here)
Theme of the Week

I will be starting a new "365 Project" tomorrow, for all of 2010. My first go at the project I lasted 156 days between 2008-2009. I hope to make it the full 365 next year!

I also have so many favorites that I took of clients, but I didn't want anyone to feel left out!

This was a very windy day :) I bruised my knee pretty badly on this one!

Just a beautiful self portrait. I've gotten a lot of compliments on it. I wish my long hair grew back already! :)

2. What was my biggest accomplishment?
Starting a business by far. Just taking the leap and spending the first four months of the year planning, organizing, registering, building and creating my business was spectacular. I haven't had a "day off" from it since the beginning of the year. I am always thinking up new ideas, images or sessions. I just enjoy it so much that I don't know how I lived before it!

3. What software/hardware really stood out above the rest for me?
Software
I've always loved Photoshop. I use CS4 now, but I've been using the software since it was 2.0. I have tried to switch to Lightroom, but I'm just a photoshop gal all the way. I actually have gotten my workflow so organized that I don't spend more than a few moments on each photo while editing. I know what I like, what I need and what I don't need. This took many hours of trial and error and playing before I figured out "my style".

I also love photoshop for designing all sorts of materials. I used it to design one of the three website designs I have used over the past year on my site. It's just so amazingly fabulous!

Hardware
It's a toss up between my Canon 40D and my 50mm f/1.4 USM lens. They are both my first loves. I can't wait to grab a few more awesome lenses  and see if Canon will come out with a new full-frame sensor DSLR in 2010. I've heard rumors ;)

4. What was my favorite book of the year that I read?
Okay, I'm a librarian by day and a photographer every other moment of my life. You'd think I've read tons of books this year. I tend to read a lot of informational materials to keep abreast in all areas of my life. The one book that stands out to my though lately is "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. I am still mid-way through this book, but it's really phenomenal. I wish everyone read it, all I want to do it discuss it with those who have! I've found that I'm one of the ones who already practices a majority of what he teaches, which is why I can be thankful and feel so blessed for getting such a positive response to my business opening this year.

5. What new blog became a staple in my reading?
I love Jasmine Starr! She is kind, loving, normal, human, a phenomenal photographer and inspiring. She's so huge, yet she takes time to offer insights into starting a business and running a business. I've learned so much from following her work and learning from her mistakes. It's amazing to think she started only a few years ago without any experience or training at all. Many people ask me if I went to school for this, and I am honest in saying "no". It's a passion, I've learned a lot and I am constantly learning more. I've learned this year, there is nothing wrong with that. I appreciate her support to all photographers out there, as many I've met are not as supportive.

I also have to give a shout out to Liz Cook, who has been an amazing inspiration and support to me this first year too! We met through our workout/running blogs and a "friendship" of sorts has blossomed out of that. I hope someday we will actually meet in person! I am sure I annoy the crap out of her with my questions, but she's always so pleasant to just answer what she can and direct me to where to look for more info! Thanks Liz :D

So, that's the end of the questions that were posed. I'm sad to say goodbye to 2009, but I'm thrilled to see what the New Year will bring.

Happy New Year!!

Abraham James / new jersey newborn photographer

Newborns are starting to be my favorite shoots! They are just so tiny, innocent and sweet. Who wouldn't want to kiss and hug this little guy?

Meagan and David had Abraham on December 15th and I was overjoyed to hear from David to schedule this session before the year was through. David is stationed here for the Army, but is originally from Ohio. It was exciting to hear about the places they've lived (Oklahoma to name one!) and the people they've met. Thankfully, they haven't seen "Jersey Shore" yet on MTV, but I think they'll be checking it out soon :)

I truly appreciate David's service to our country and I am thankful for the opportunity to meet such a wonderful growing family! I am looking forward to photographing Abe while he grows over the next year, too.

Without further babbling... here are a few of my favorites from our shoot:

Merry Christmas / new jersey holiday photographer

Someone snatched up all the gifts on my niece's wish-list the day the list was sent out! I think I knew who that was... *mom* So, Chris and I bought Ayla something that she could really grow into, a Big Red Flyer tricycle! We had so much fun on Christmas Eve playing with our niece. She's really getting to a great age where she's fearless and just wants to be the center of attention. We're happy to oblige :)

I think "Uncle Chris" is going to be Ayla's favorite. Every time he left the room, she'd start whispering "Unc Chris" and looking around for him. It was too darn cute! I know Chris loves playing with Ayla and it just makes us really look forward to the years to come together.

No matter what holiday you celebrate, I hope you enjoy the season and have a lot of fun with your family too!

Ayla & Uncle Chris - this was the last shot I snapped that night... and it's my favorite!

My mom's festive shoes!

The Chewy / new jersey food photographer

Every year we go to Chris' parent's house for Cookiefest. A day long event where we bake hundreds of various kinds of cookies. This year, we were supposed to go up on Sunday. Unfortunately, the snow kept us home. So, while Chris and I were snowed in, we decided to bake some Chocolate Chip Cookies!

We used our favorite recipe from Alton Brown, The Chewy. Here are some snapshots of our cookie baking, while not as amazing as the images from the Pioneer Woman, I have an excuse! I was a little busy taste testing the cookie dough throughout the process :)

Blizzard '09 / weather photographer

This weekend was a lot of fun. Chris and I were snowed in by the Blizzard of '09! When all was said and done we ended up with 24+ inches of snow. Even though Chris shoveled twice on Saturday night, the next morning we had another foot on top of the walkway. He did a a great job digging us out of the snow, while I made tasty hot cocoa!

We had so much fun this weekend, I didn't get a chance to blog the Holiday Giveaway Winner: Judy! She was the only one to post, so she wins :) I was hoping that there may be more than a handful of readers checkin' out my fab blog, but it's okay. It takes time to build up a following. Also, instead of posting for the giveaway, I received more inquiries and booked a few more sessions with previous clients... just by sending them a reminder to post on the giveaway blog! So, that's how awesome my clients are! They don't want giveaways, they just want excellent service.

Oh, and how cool is this? We just had a brand new sliding door installed as the snow began on Saturday morning. The guys did an awesome job. Our old door was so drafty, so I'd say we got this door just in time!

Here are a few photos from our fun in the snow! Cookie baking pictures to come soon :)

Bambi would be buried if she went out the door into the snow!
The picture on the left is from the night before and on the right is after the snow stopped!

Time to Party! / photographer news

Chris and I have had an annual holiday party each December for the past four years. It has grown and become such an enjoyable event with family and friends. I was too busy having a great time with everyone, that I didn't get too many pictures! I have a few of everyone there, but nothing too phenomenal... well, other than some shots of our English muffin pizzas.

There was so much food, I'm sure everyone had their fill! Luckily, this year we finally had a few leftovers...yum!

Bambi was hiding the entire time we were cooking and getting the house ready...

Curves up ahead / new jersey photographer

This year has been a wonderful roller-coaster of events, weddings and portrait sessions. The time has really flown by and I look back and all my weekends were full! That makes me feel like I'm headed in the right direction, don't you think? Working, starting a business and taking further graduate school courses has been slightly insane. Didn't you know I like to keep busy? No not just busy, really really busy. My friend Judy knows, just ask her!

To start my business, I put a few things on the back-burner. I realize I must get back to doing these things if I want to stay healthy and energetic enough to keep up with my blooming ideas! A year ago, I was focused and running regularly. This past year, I've been a slacker! Chris wasn't always thrilled about healthy eating, but he's really picked up my slack this year for me. This week... he says "why not have all our dinners without meat?" - my husband said this, yes, truly, he said it. I am thrilled!!!

So, all of these changes this past year have changed me. My photographic mind has changed. I worked this year to start to develop my style. I've found that I'm really attached to sharp, crisp images. What got me starting to think was the other day I took a completely blurry photo. I saw it and just stared a moment, I didn't want to delete it. Sometimes a sharp image isn't what tells the story.

Over time, I've learned that I don't like people to look like statues or be posed with a static background. I like nature, wind, sun, clouds, shade, shadows and so much more that the world has to offer in connection with people in an image. I apparently like blurry too :) Over the next year I'm going to be more true to myself and my style in my sessions. I have a lot to offer, if I just allow myself to be me.

This year I posted a lot of session images, but not too much of myself or my experience. I've had a lot of criticism in starting my business. I got to the point where I wouldn't even mention that I was a photographer to people I'd meet. It's very hard to keep going when you hear constant criticism. Even other photographers I've tried to connect with locally were not kind to my approach. Thankfully, Chris has been my biggest fan and has really encouraged me this whole time. So have my awesome, amazing clients - seriously, each and every one of them has been so encouraging!!!

In the next year, I'm going to try to share information on how I do things to help whoever reads my wacky blog. I've been blessed to connect with Liz Cook, who has shared so much with me! Without her inspiration and guidance, I might never have started this journey. I have to thank Jasmine Starr too! She shares so much with the world on her blog that inspires me to continually improve.

While I spent a lot of time this year following others, next year I hope to use what I've learned from them and start to offer the world what is Katelyn Nesi. I hope you'll continue on this journey with me :) I'm also planning to take better care of my body and mind, and well, my husband too!

Here's the blurry photo in question that just made me take a deep breath and reflect...

Lauren + Jay / new jersey engagement and wedding photographer

A Yankees themed wedding is in store for Lauren and Jay next summer and I am so excited to be a part of it! I met Lauren a few months ago at an outing for work and we were talking about her engagement and wedding planning. I mentioned I was a photographer and her eyes lit up!

I like to get to know my couples before their big day and an engagement portrait session is the perfect way to do so. I can learn so much about someone through photographs and watching how they interact as a couple. They also get used to me and my camera which helps them relax on their wedding day!

After talking with Lauren and Jay, I found out Jay is a chef. How cool is that? My husband has a silly track record with his meals, so I am sure Lauren enjoys some fancy meals when Jay isn't too tired from work.

They make such a sweet couple! Seriously, I loved Jay's playful attitude and Lauren fell right into comfort when the Yankees jerseys came out. I had so many amazing images from their session, it was really hard to narrow it down. I've included a bunch more than normal... cuz they are just toooo darn cute!

Without further ado... I know Lauren and Jay are waiting for these...
